We got to see a local production of the Nutcracker yesterday (some very good friends/neighbor's daughter was in it). Jack was sitting next to me giving me suggestions about the sketch -- until the lights went down and the show began.
Thank you France and Andrea. I drew all of it before the show started. We got there early, so I had about 15 or 20 minutes, I think. I don't have the patience, generally, to work on a sketch beyond one sitting. Sometimes I'll color it in Photoshop later, but that would be the exception to the rule.
I use a super-soft (6b) graphite pencil and a pastel stump to smear the graphite around. It kind of looks like a wash, but without the wet mess. Very easy and portable.
this kind of scene I still find so difficult! I can usually understand and draw the parts but still get confused when putting everything together as a whole, makes me admire what you've done here all the more!

I love the fact that you can put so much information in your pictures without overloading them with details. Great perspective too.
This is just great Anthony! How much of it did you draw at the show??

Wow. Is there not a wash on it though?? What medium did you use?

Really nice, like I'm sitting there. I especially love the boy looking back at you. That image is so alive! Respect.
I agree with everyone's comments. The boy looking back at you adds such energy to the drawing. The perspective is great too.
