Painting kids painting

As we were cleaning out the garage a little while ago I stumbled upon these paintings we had done for Joan as a mother's day gift about four years ago. (Note how much younger the kids look.) Anyway, I had bought four of those little nine-inch pre-stretched, pre-primed canvasses and asked the kids to paint her pictures while I painted them painting. Mine is really more of a sketch than a painting. I just drew with a fine point Sharpie directly on the canvass and colored it with the craft acrylics we had (you can see the bottles of paint on the table). I know this isn't recent, but when I saw them I thought it would be fun to post.

I like this abstract one Lily painted :)

I know I have said this before, but it is worth saying again; the family feeling in your sketches is wonderful! I love the activity in this! What great gifts!

You seem like the greatest dad! I can only imagine what it will mean to your children one day to have such a wonderfully expressive collection of images from their childhood. I found your technique on this one especially interesting. I'm also fond of using both a sharpie and craft paint on canvas. I think it makes the process so much less 'serious.'

These are so much fun, Anthony. And yours is especially wonderful. You have such a gift for catching action and emotion. And your colors here are just perfect, so lively and saturated.

What a great mother's day gift that was. It's good to see what you do with colors too. What a neat scene that must have been.

Thank you all for the nice comments. They had a lot of fun doing this, partly because it was all a big secret, and every time my wife would start to come into the room they got a kick out of being able to tell her to leave. We should do this again before they get too much older.

These are wonderful! I love the paintings the littlest kids make before they get into the archetypical houses and rainbows and stuff like that. Your sketch of them is terrific. It's great to be able to showcase your kids' art on your blog (internet: the new refrigerator?).
